OPTO Institucional

Opto Eletrônica S/A is a technology company in the optoelectronics sector, operating in the medical, industrial and optical components sectors. A pioneer in several sectors, OPTO is synonymous with innovation and respect for customers, society and the environment.

In December 2009, OPTO received the FINEP Innovation Award in the Medium-Sized Company category. This recognition is part of OPTO’s history of challenges and achievements, which, since its creation in 1985, has contributed to transforming knowledge and high technology into genuine wealth for society and future generations.

OPTO supports several initiatives for the development of technology in universities and research centers throughout Brazil. Today, the company consists of an industrial plant, 3 anti-reflective laboratories and a unit abroad.

Our History

OPTO was born from the realization of the dream of its founders, who at the time were researchers and technicians at the Physics Institute of the USP Campus in São Carlos. Always at the forefront of new optoelectronic technologies, OPTO was the first company in the southern hemisphere to produce a laser – in this case, the HeNe (Helium-Neon) laser. The company then manufactured the first barcode reader for use in supermarkets (technology later sold to a large company in the commercial automation sector).

In its first year of operation, OPTO nationalized the production of blue filters, used in the photopolymerization of dental resins, and dental reflectors – products manufactured by the company to this day. In the first two decades of production alone, more than one million dental reflectors were manufactured by OPTO – which corresponds to more than one million dental offices worldwide using reflectors produced by the company.

Between 1988 and 1992, OPTO dedicated itself to developing industrial applications for the Helium-Neon lasers it manufactured. During this period, the company placed almost 4,000 pieces of equipment on the market, including positioners for the tire industry, innovative laser adaptations for theodolites (surveying instruments), and railway track alignment systems with incredible precision of 2 mm over 500 meters.

The company’s mastery of technologies in the areas of optics and electronics led it to enter the medical-ophthalmic equipment market in 1992, initially distributing photocoagulation lasers for the retina and then developing and producing its own equipment. In this market, the first product was the Surgical Microscope, entirely developed by OPTO and exported worldwide. More than 2,200 units have already been produced. Always ahead of the curve, the company developed and launched the fully digital Retinograph onto the market, becoming one of the few companies in the world to produce this equipment, as well as the various lasers produced by OPTO.

OPTO’s innovative nature also led it to work together with researchers from important universities and teaching hospitals where several studies were carried out for the treatment of eye diseases, one of the most important being the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (one of the biggest causes of blindness today).

In 1996, OPTO pioneered the introduction of anti-reflective treatment for eyeglass lenses in the Brazilian market. Today, the company has 3 units located in São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul and Ceará, with over 2 million pairs of treated lenses. The company is the only one in the Brazilian market to develop its own treatments, often being innovative.

In 1993, OPTO began producing the first aerospace-quality optical components: high-precision prisms for imaging systems. The following year, the company began developing laser sensors for military defense systems, such as anti-aircraft missile fuses and laser guidance systems for anti-tank missiles.

With experience in military and high-tech equipment, OPTO was invited to participate in the development and manufacturing of cameras for the Sino-Brazilian satellites CBERS 3, CBERS 4 and Amazônia 1. Its cameras are currently on satellites in space, orbiting the Earth and producing high-quality images for applications such as agriculture, geological research, studying city growth, deforestation, etc.

Having completed 38 years, OPTO continues to be a company that never stops developing technologies and innovating, always with a focus on the future.

Ao completar 35 anos a OPTO continua uma empresa que não para de desenvolver tecnologias e inovar, e sempre com o foco no futuro.
